Without Expectation started as a book. It became a proof of concept for everything Pure Inference builds.
The question was simple: can one person, with AI leverage, ship a complete publishing ecosystem — not just the manuscript, but the website, the mobile app, the store, the marketing pipeline, the review tooling, and the quality enforcement? The answer is on this page.
Every component was built bespoke. The marketing site isn't a Squarespace template. The iOS app isn't a white-label reader. The manuscript pipeline isn't Google Docs with comments. Each piece was designed for exactly one book, exactly one author, and exactly one workflow — then built with the same tools and practices we use on client projects.
The result is a portfolio piece that spans our full stack: Next.js for the web, Rails for the backend, Swift and SwiftUI for iOS, on-device ML for semantic search, and a custom test runner (Twain) that enforces writing quality the way RuboCop enforces code quality. If we can build this for a book, we can build it for your business.

Manuscript Pipeline
23 chapters managed in git. AI-assisted drafting, revision tracking, acceptance criteria per chapter. Every editorial decision in the commit log.
Marketing Website
Custom Next.js site with chapter previews, foreword, debug log, email capture, and structured data. Not a template — built from scratch.
iOS Companion App
Full book reader, audiobook, 26 AI prompt templates, and semantic search powered by on-device ML. One purchase, no subscriptions, works offline.
Twain (Quality Enforcement)
Config-driven test runner for written content. Enforces style guide, checks thematic threads, flags anti-patterns. Runs on commits, blog posts, and the manuscript.
Beta Reader System
Structured feedback collection with chapter-level ratings, open response fields, and aggregate analysis. Built in Rails, deployed on Render.
Content Pipeline
Automated generation of social cards, pull quotes, chapter summaries, and marketing copy from the manuscript source. Same compounding loop we use on every project.
